 *MERGER OF MANIPUR WITH THE INDIAN UNION 21st Sept. 1949:*  The merger agreement of *Manipur* with the *Indian* *Union* was signed between the *Maharaja of Manipur Shri (L) Bodha Chandra Singh and Shri V.P. Why a UT modelled on the lines of Puducherry could work? It is time to use our ingenuity and creativity to solve the vexed problem of overlapping claims over territories in the Hills of Manipur. When there are competiting claims and the problems are as complex and chaotic as in the case of Manipur Hill districts, the solution must also reflect the realities on the ground. To put it simply, the "Out-of-the-box Thinking" could throw up many possibilities and an acceptable solution can be picked by all stakeholders through consensus. The myriad of tribes have diversity of opinion and views within the in-group as well. Respecting diversity and choices is the only way to bring about lasting solution in the region. Let this be the guiding principle for any solution that is proposed to the Union government. Dear Readers & fellow Indians, (Regarding Links with Khalistanis) As rightly pointed out by News 9, this is an allegation that GoI must prove. Having known Lien Gangte and his family for decades, I am appalled by the insinuation that he is a separatist Kuki leader having links with Khalistanis. He neither supports nor rejects them because his opinion on the matter was never sought. Being the son of an IPS Officer and having studied in Delhi, he is a patriot to the core, the way his community is. Except for the die-hard few Meiteis who have been strongly conditioned to believe that they are descendents of Arjuna of Mahabharata fame and they are therefore Mayang Aryans, the overwhelming majority Meiteis do believe that they are Yelhoumee – the indigenous people of Manipur; that their forefathers were the original first settlers of this part of the world and they have maintained historical continuity in living in this land.
